The whirling dervishes and their hypnotic Sema ceremony have enchanted onlookers for centuries. Developed by the famous Islamic poet Rumi in the 13th century, the ceremony is a mesmerising mix of meditation, music, and dance performed by men in long white robes and tall felt hats. The dance is mastered by only a gifted few, who move in continual circles in a hypnotic trance, believing their movements will bring them closer to God.

Although there are many tourist whirling dervish shows around the country, a trip to Konya, where the Mevlevi order and the dervishes were established, is the most authentic. Over recent years, Türkiye has emerged as one of Europe’s premier golfing destinations. Türkiye is not well known for its wine, but legend would suggest that Türkiye is one of the world’s oldest wine countries. It is said that when Noah’s Ark ran aground on Mount Ararat, Noah planted the very first vines after the big flood. Unfortunately, there is no evidence to support this, but there is evidence to suggest Türkiye has produced wine for more than 7,000 years.

France and Italy are better known for their wineries, but Türkiye homes some excellent vineyards and grows many well-known grape varieties, including Merlot, Shiraz, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Since the 14^th century, the country maintained a strong wine trade; however, the fall of the Ottoman Empire, political instability, and government restrictions dampened production, with the industry only really recovering since the 1980s. It is now possible to visit a vineyard and sample a range of rich and vibrant Turkish wines in many areas along the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts.
