DATCA, TURKEY’S COASTAL GEM

“The spindly, 50-mile-long Datca peninsula in Turkiye’s Muğla province is a dagger of pure green at the meeting point of the Aegean and the Mediterranean, and is as unsullied as south-west Turkiye gets.” This is how The Guardian described the area in one of its travel reports on the region. Strabo, the geographer is also quoted as saying, “God sent his beloved creatures to Datça for them to live longer.” This is quite some praise.

Datca

It’s true, Datca is glorious and remarkably unspoiled compared to the glitz and glamour of Bodrum and Yalikavak to its North, and the somewhat over-commercial Marmaris to the South. Datca is a retreat offering a pretty traditional Old Town, some fabulous new boutique hotels and spas, a growing number of great restaurants and bars; there’s also a good selection of shops and boutiques. The waters and bays surrounding the village are some of the most beautiful bays along the coast. It’s a location certainly worth visiting now before it fills with the package-holiday crowd and all the faff and frills that come with the main resorts.
