Take in the striking beauty of the Turkish coast by exploring the waters around Bodrum and the Gulf of Gokova. This beautiful region of the South Aegean boasts clear turquoise waters, islands, ancient sites, and spectacular backdrops that have lured sailors and superyachts for decades. Here’s a look at the best anchorages around the Gulf of Gokova.
Orak Island
Just a short distance from Bodrum, in the beautiful Gulf of Gokova, is Orak Island. The island features olive tree-clad hills that tumble into clear blue waters, so it is a popular location for swim stops, diving, and snorkeling. The best anchorages are found to the east and west of the island, and there are several good resorts and restaurants tucked into the bays, so LET US KNOW if you need PROVISIONS for a lazy lunch on board.
Highlight: If you enjoy diving, a few hours of light or deep diving on Orak Island can be arranged. During this time, you can explore an attractive deep vertical reef wall, a c32m-deep cave covered in purple sponges, and may spot a few lobsters, long thornback rays, and sea bass. Other interesting spots locally include Karacasogut Village and the Seven Islands.
Seven Islands
The Seven Islands are home to many of the best anchorages around the Gulf of Gokova. Located between the capes of Taneli and Teke Burnu, this area affords many places perfect for swim stops, or you can also venture ashore and take walks through the pine and olive-tree-lined shores. This area is popular with daily boats and blue cruisers, but it is large enough to find a secluded spot to enjoy. Caution is, however, advised in the Seven Islands region, as some of the waters near the islands are rocky and shallow.
Kissebuku
Around 3 miles from Orak Island is Kissebuku, so-called as the word kilise means church in Turkish, and it refers to the ruins of a Byzantine monastery, which can be found in the area. Although many yachts visit Kissebuku to enjoy the calm waters and protection from Western winds, it is also possible to head ashore and explore the ruins of the monastery, a cistern, and a bathhouse.
English Port
The historic English Port or English Harbour, is another well visited location between Bodrum and the Gulf of Gokova. The bay got its name as it was once used as a base for the English Navy during World War II, and several warships and vessels have come to rest in its depths. English Port is an interesting place to snorkel, and there are also a few local restaurants and shops in the area.
Bencik Bay
Located at the end of the peninsula separating the Gokova Gulf from the Gulf of Hisaronu, there are many lovely anchorages and coves around Bencik Bay. The bay is sheltered from prevailing winds, so popular with yachts that stop for swimming during the day or choose to overnight and enjoy the sounds of nature. There’s a basic beach and camping ground with a café towards the east of the bay, but most who visit Bencik Bay do so to spend time on the yacht, enjoy water sports, or snorkel in its clear turquoise waters.
Sedir Island (Cleopatra Island)
You may be familiar with Sedir Island (Cleopatra Island), as we have mentioned it before in our newsletters and articles. This former fishing island, situated just north of Kissebuku in the Gulf of Gokova, is surrounded by myth and legend. It is said that Queen Cleopatra found the island so alluring that she organised special sand made from shells, with each grain a perfect shape, to be taken to its famous beach from Egypt. Although the island is now a popular day trip destination and commercial, the waters around Sedir Island are clear and warm, so it is still a worthwhile stop, especially early morning or as the sun sets to avoid crowds.
Cokertme Bay
Close to Bodrum, Cokertme Bay offers clear waters, beautiful scenery, and protection from the wind, so you often find yachts anchored here for the night. There is also a small village with a few scattered local waterfront restaurants serving Turkish meze, seafood, and local drinks, should you wish to enjoy a little time with the local onshore.
